Equine: NFT Game Development

Virtual horse racing and breeding ecosystem built on the Cardano blockchain.

Equine is a sophisticated virtual horse racing and breeding ecosystem built on the Cardano blockchain. The project was founded by a team of true domain experts, including a Chief Advisor with over two decades of real-world horse industry experience and a CTO from the very first cohort of Cardano’s Plutus Pioneer program.

Their mission was to create the most authentic and strategic Web3 gaming experience, where players could own, race, breed, and trade unique NFT horses with deep, realistic stats and personalities. What’s even better, they had a massive community of Web3 enthusiasts looking forward for this Cardano drop, eager to participate and make profits.

With this setup, the founders needed a vendor able to deliver a reliable platform, fast. And they turned to Fireart.

Equine had a collection of high-value NFTs and a 40,000-strong passionate community, but needed a platform to bring their ambitious vision to life. Our challenge was the play to earn nft game development that would become
a premium digital experience.

Challenges & Project Goals

With a highly respected team and initial NFT sale that generated significant buzz, Equine’s leadership knew their digital platform had to be flawless. It needed to justify the high value of their assets for their community.

Challenges

Translating the Complexity

The game’s mechanics involved realistic equestrian genetics and racing strategy, physical and mental stats. The challenge was to present this data in a way that was intuitive even for beginner players.

Justifying an Investment

With NFT bundles priced at a premium, the platform’s look and feel had to deliver on quality and sophistication. A generic interface would undermine user satisfaction and the value of the assets.

Unifying an Ecosystem

The client had a strong community of 20,000 followers on Twitter, NFT assets on the blockchain, and an in-house team creating 3D models and a game engine. They needed a central, user-friendly platform to bring all these pieces into one cohesive user experience.

Goals

Design a premium brand

The branding had to reflect the high quality of the NFTs and the expertise of the founding team.

Create a seamless and engaging UI/UX

Gaming design and development had to cover complete game lifecycle, from marketplace and stable management to racing and breeding.

Execute the blockchain design and development integration

The platform had to connect the user-facing elements with the client’s game engine, NFTs, and the Cardano wallet.

Our Approach

Our solution was a comprehensive partnership where Fireart’s frontend and design teams worked with the client’s backend side to craft a world-class NFT gaming platform. This complete p2e platform development effort was structured around key deliverables.

Community-driven Brand and UI/UX Design

We designed the entire UX in an agile loop, allowing the Equine team to validate every design sketch directly with their 40,000-strong community before development.

Complex Technical Integration

Our development team pioneered the use of WebAssembly (WASM) to integrate the client’s proprietary 3D game engine and built a system for fetching NFT assets from users’ Cardano wallets.

Full-Stack Platform Development

We crafted the entire ecosystem, including the user-facing web platform, the custom backend and APIs, and a fully functional (though ultimately unreleased) mobile application.

How We Built a Home for
a New Breed of Gamer

The project was a partnership between two expert teams. The Equine team provided the core 3D assets, blockchain logic, and domain knowledge; Fireart provided the design and development expertise for the complex blockchain game development needed to build the world around it.

01 Finding a Reliable Charger

Range anxiety is a trust issue, a fear of going far in an EV and not finding a working charger. To solve this, our EV charging app design features a map that allows navigation and shows which stations are available. We’ve implemented a range of other features to address this issue in full:

  • A reservation system for charging spots with limits on usage time.
  • Two modes: private (for home charging) and public (for public stations).
  • A route planning feature that automatically adds charging stations to the trip.
  • Real-time charge status tracking with notifications.

We would design one flow, like a rough sketch for ‘Racing,’ and the client would immediately share it with their community on Twitter. They’d come back with real user feedback, and we’d refine it. The platform was built for the users, with the users.

As our lead designer, Evgenia, recalled, the process was a direct feedback loop

02 Designing a "Management Game," Not an Arcade Game

The client’s vision was an elite “Horse Racing Management Game.” They wanted a professional interface, not a cartoonish or overly gamified UI. Our NFT gaming platform design delivered on this by creating a premium aesthetic using a royal blue and gold palette.

The best part of our workflow was that the design team was fully dedicated. This meant that when the developers were implementing a feature and discovered a missing state or a logical gap—like an error screen—we could deliver the needed assets ‘on the go,’ very quickly. There were no bottlenecks.

03 Overcoming a Pioneering Technical Challenge

The most significant hurdle of this blockchain game design case study was on the development side. The client’s custom 3D game engine was delivered as a WebAssembly (WASM) file—a cutting-edge technology at the time. As Rafal, our Head of Development, explained:

Overcoming a Pioneering Technical Challenge

It was something new for us. WebAssembly was not a common technology, so we were pioneers in figuring out how to embed this complex 3D engine into our front-end application and make it work seamlessly. The whole 3D experience depended on it.

Results: the “Most Anticipated
Drop” and Mainnet Launch

Our partnership enabled Equine to launch a highly anticipated, premium Web3 gaming platform that lived up to the expertise of its founders and the expectations of its community.

We’re happy to conclude this NFT game development case study with the note that three years later, the game has been launched on the mainnet, signaling the ultimate success for the blockchain project.

A Powerful Platform

We delivered a technically sturdy platform that connected a beautiful front-end with a complex 3D game engine and the Cardano blockchain, creating a unified home for the Equine ecosystem.

A Powerful Platform

A High-Value Launch

The platform provided a credible and premium home for Equine’s NFTs, supporting what was described by the community as “perhaps the most anticipated NFT drop of 2021 on Cardano.

A Beloved User Experience

The final UI successfully simplified the game’s deep, realistic mechanics, making it accessible for players to manage their stables, strategize for races, and engage with the breeding system.

Long-Term Success and Mainnet Launch

The up-to-par platform, design, UX, and UI, combined with the founders’ team dedication and professionalism, gave Equine exactly the building ground it was looking for. Timely launch and years of successful beta-testing with the involvement of a growing community brought Equine to the launch on mainnet in 2024 – the ultimate success milestone for the blockchain projects.
