Specialty Box rebranding: building <br>a B2B identity on playful personality

Specialty Box is a family-owned business in New York that provides custom packaging services, from boxes and wraps to branded bags and tape.

The company has built a reputation on two key strengths: an incredibly fast response time and a fun, humor-driven approach to customer service. Their full of personality and character brand has grown on the strength of the company’s relationships – and it was ripe to get a distinct image to represent it.

Problem: How to grow up without becoming boring

Specialty Box had a brand that their customers loved, but their visuals hadn’t kept pace with their success. Their look was holding them back from bigger B2B opportunities, and they came to us. They had a very specific fear, though: a rebrand case study often ends with a company looking like every other serious, corporate competitor. They wanted a professional look, but they refused to become boring.

Challenges

A Look That Didn’t Match Their Ambition

Their existing brand identity felt like a small, local shop. It didn’t reflect their expertise, their speed, or their readiness to handle large, professional accounts.

The Fear of Losing their Personality

This was Specialty Box’s biggest concern. They needed a professional rebranding case study that wouldn’t strip away the humor and approachability that made their family-owned business branding unique.

An Inconsistent Identity That Couldn’t Scale

Without a unified system, their materials were all over the place. They lacked the guidelines and assets needed to look consistent across their website, social media, and physical packaging.

Goals

Create a “Playful Professional” Identity

The main goal was to design a B2B brand identity design that was clean, modern, and credible, while still being full of the fun and character that defined their brand.

Highlight Their Real Superpower: Speed

We needed to visually reflect their key differentiator — the lightning-fast response time — making it a memorable part of their brand identity.

Deliver a Practical Toolkit for Growth

The final deliverable had to be a complete and easy-to-use system. We set out to create a full brand book and style guide design to empower their team for long-term, consistent growth.

Our Approach

Our plan was to create a professional rebranding that celebrated Specialty Box’s unique personality, not erased it. We focused on delivering four key outcomes.

  • A strategy built on the Brand’s DNA

A collaborative workshop and competitor research gave us the brand's core attributes, including the idea of a "modern-retro" vibe to reflect their deep experience as a family-owned business.

  • A real choice of creative directions deliverable

We presented three creative directions in our "Bento box" format – a full visual overview of each concept. This gave the client a tangible choice and made the creative process a true partnership.

  • A lovable brand character deliverable

The heart of the custom brand identity design was a friendly box mascot, brought to life in dozens of custom isometric illustrations that communicate speed and energy.

  • A Practical Toolkit for Growth Deliverable

A complete brand book and style guide design with all the assets and guidelines the Specialty Box team needed to scale with confidence.

Turning a personality
into a brand

Our process was guided by a single idea we shared with the client: just because you're a B2B business, you don't have to look "overly serious." This philosophy shaped every step of this rebrand case study.

01 Finding the Brand's DNA

The project started with a discovery workshop where we listened to the Specialty Box team talk about their strengths and customers.

Your brand can’t be everything at once. You have to boil it down. For Specialty Box, we got it down to four keywords: fast, personal, fun, and experienced. That became our blueprint for the design.

02 Designing in Partnership

With our blueprint in hand, we developed the three creative directions. We presented them in our “Bento box” format. It’s a package of mockups showing each brand in action, which clients love. After they chose the direction with the single box character, we refined it together. Their suggestion to keep just the character’s eyes was a great call, and that collaborative tweak made the final design much stronger.

02 Designing in Partnership

03 A Mascot with a Mission

The new identity centers on the Specialty Box character. To communicate their “fast” superpower, our illustrator created a series of custom isometric illustrations. This specific 3D-like style gave the character a ton of versatility, allowing us to place it in endless creative scenes — from flying with a propeller to playing poker. This creative rebranding for small business turned a packaging company into a likeable brand with a helpful buddy at its center.

04 The Toolkit for Long-Term Growth

A great brand identity is useless if it’s not easy to use. The final step was to deliver a full brand book and style guide design, a library of illustrations, and templates. This practical toolkit empowers the Specialty Box team to apply their new brand consistently, ensuring this rebranding success story continues long after our work is done.

Results: Unboxing a Brand That's Ready to Scale

This rebranding success story got its happy ending with a complete, scalable brand package that solved the client’s core challenge: looking professional without becoming another faceless corporation. The new identity gave the Specialty Box team the tools they needed to attract bigger B2B clients and scale.

A Complete Brand System for Growth

We delivered a full toolkit, including a brand book and style guide design, a library of custom illustrations, and ready-to-use templates. Everything the team needs to apply the brand identity consistently.

An Identity That Stands Out

The playful mascot and unique visual style immediately differentiate Specialty Box in a traditional B2B market. Memorability makes this brand character a valuable asset in a busy market.

Positive Initial Reception

The client shared the new brand identity with some of their most trusted, long-term customers, who all gave enthusiastic feedback. This early validation proved the new look resonated with their audience and successfully captured the company’s beloved personality.

Just because it’s a B2B business, it doesn’t have to be like corporate or overly serious. You can still have funny copy or lighthearted materials, illustrations, and colors, and it can still look professional. We wanted to keep that fun in their traits.
